Colombian Digital Library is now one step closer

During the second semester of 2006, Colciencias called for the presentation of research, technological development and innovative projects that used the National Network of Advanced Technology (RENATA).

Due to this call, different universities and research groups related to library sciences, information technologies, digital contents, scientific information and e-learning assisted in the creation of the Digital Colombian Library, which will allow different universities in the country to publish in the same environment their own digital contents online for review by the academic community.

After the evaluation, the project was approved at the end of last year, which represented a great goal, an opportunity to demonstrate that 12 universities can work jointly and be committed to the project.

The project started in February and hopefully will end by the middle of next year (18 months); and consequently achieve the following benefits through their objectives for the Colombian academic community, and the world in general, due to the fact that the digital Library networks can connect on a global level:

• A framework of agreements, policies and standards for the shared used of digital documents between all the Colombian universities.
• Digital Libraries or databases in most of the higher education institutions that connect with the project and thus share their contents in a decentralized way.
• An integration pilot project of those Digital Libraries and databases
• A management pattern that allows continuity to this initiative and connects between other higher education institutions and scientific and academic organizations.
• An online training course about Digital Libraries.
• A web site to look up information about the project and digital libraries.

This is the first step closer to a Digital Colombian Library. These are the universities and research groups with a commitment who are in charge of the project:

Universidad EAFIT:
Research Group on Networks and Distributed Systems (GIRSD).
Universidad de Antioquia:
Research groups about Knowledge Management, Information Technologies, Terminology and Documentation.
Universidad ICESI:
Research Group in Resources and Technologies for the Apprenticeship (IRTA).
Universidad del Norte:
Educational Information Technology Research Group .
Universidad de La Salle:
Libraries, Information and Society Research Group.
Universidad Autónoma de Occidente:
Education and New Technologies Research Group .
Universidad Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
Universidad de Medellín.
Universidad de la Sabana.
Universidad Autónoma del Caribe.
Universidad de Santiago de Cali.
Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios

The Knowledge Society is an ideal to which the present information era is headed, by means of the humanization of the technological media used at the present time, in such a way that these technological media become an instrument for the integral development of the human being.
